All about IPL 2011

in IPL

The Indian Premier League in the year 2011 would be completely different from the three preceding editions in a lot of ways. The new format has been discussed in the previous post, though it was a tad confusing. But you don’t have to worry about all that.

Presenting…

How IPL 2011 works, a Paddle Sweep original.

Group Stage
There are 10 teams, divided into 2 groups of 5 each. Now, just for the sake of simplicity in explanation, let us divide the 10 franchises into two groups. Do note that these are for representational purposes only and are in no way an indication of what the actual draw might look like. Here we go:

random ipl draw, not the real on, wait for the real one, we will let you know

I repeat, these are not actual draws.

Ok, moving on. Each team plays the other 4 in their pool 2 times, home and away, totaling 8 games per team. Additionally, each team plays games with all the teams of the other pool as well, in the following way:

  • It plays 4 of the 5 teams in the other group once (home/away to be decided randomly)
  • It plays the remaining team in the other group twice (home and away)
  • All this is randomly decided, much before the tournament begins
  • This means each team will play an additional 6 games in the group stage.
  • Total Games per team: 8+6=14, the same as last three editions

Smartly done, if it has been clearly understood by fans. We hope its clear. In our example, let us suppose we are Mumbai Indians and the team we play twice in Pool B is Rajasthan Royals. Then we will play Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Rajasthan and Pune twice, and Punjab, Delhi, Deccan and Kochi once, totaling 2*5   +  1*4  = 14 games.

Every team in Pool A will have a corresponding team in Pool B whom they will play twice.

Hope the group stages are clear. Let me know if otherwise.

Playoffs and Final
Once the group stage is over, the top 4 teams (overall, irrespective of the Pool they are in) qualify for the Playoffs. Let the teams qualifying be Team 1, Team 2, Team 3 and Team 4, in that order.

Now, there will be three games to decide the finalists.

Game 1: Team 1 vs Team 2

Game 2: Team 3 vs Team 4

Game 3: Winner Game 2 vs Loser Game 1

Final: Winner Game 1 vs Winner Game 3

CLT20 qualifiers: Finalists and Loser Game 3

This should sort things out for everyone. If you have any further query, let me know and I would try to resolve them.

Leave your response in the comments section below.

Coming up: How will franchises pick players, and all the talk about retention, catchment and beyond. Watch this space.

Shouldn’t it be how IPL 2011 works..a small typo i guess…

IMO the teams should have been put in groups on the basis of last year’s rankings rather than deciding it randomly by a draw…

Cricinfo’s first report completely screwed up the entire format. But what I don’t understand is why create this confusion of 2 matches with 4 teams in your group and 1 team in the other group… and just 1 match with the other 4 teams in the other group.

To create simplicity, it should have been 2 matches with each team in the other Group, and just 1 match each with the other teams of your own Group. This would have been so much more easier to understand and follow.

Shridhar, this is the best possible format which would please all stakeholders actually. By the format you have suggested every team would have 4*2+5*1= 13 matches, which would mean a decrease from the previous editions of the IPL. And also half the teams would have more home than away matches and vice versa. The minimum guarantee matches is the basis on which the teams have put in their money. The new franchisees will be compensated 4/18th as they when they placed their bid they were assured of 18 matches. What needs to be seen is that whether the original 8 franchisees will be compensated or not as in the original contract they had mentioned the increase in the no of teams hence the guaranteed number of matches.

That’s not what I suggested, Aditya! Here is what I had written:

“To create simplicity, it should have been 2 matches with each team in the other Group, and just 1 match each with the other teams of your own Group.”

In the above example, if I am Mumbai Indians from Group A, then I will play 2 matches each against the 5 teams in Group B. And I will also play 1 match each with the other 4 teams in my own Group A. That still makes it 14 matches in all.

And it removes the confusion in this new format, where you play 2 matches against 1 team of the other group and 1 match with the other 4 teams of that other group.

yes, that would even take care of the home away matches 7 home 7 away! But being in the same group they wanted them to play twice maybe. they wanted unpredictability in the format. Hence all this.

What you have suggested would definitely decrease the complexity of the format.
