Top Honours for Fred: Knob of the Week

in England, General Sweeps

I’ve always been a fan of Andrew Flitnoff, or Fred Flintoff as he is affectionately known. There is just something about his bad boy demeanour, his gingerness and his complete chav-likeness that made him stand out.

So then, when he announced his retirement from all forms of the game today I was a little bit bummed. I definitely wasn’t surprised, he’s been crocked for longer than most Arsenal players and there was just no chance he was ever going to return to former “glory”. Even if he were to be restored to ‘former glory’ the rest of the England is just too good for him to cement a place in the starting XI – he is average, there are better players. Sorry, mate.

“It is with both disappointment and sadness that I am today announcing my retirement from all forms of cricket,” said Flintoff at the presser.

“The decision to end my career came yesterday after consultation with medical advisers. I was told that the problems I have been trying to overcome in re-hab for the last year following the latest in a series of operations would not recover sufficiently to allow a comeback.”

What is however, incredibly irksome is that he has decided to do this on the day that the County Championship is set to climax. And what an epic final day in county cricket it is.

Somerset are on course to become Champions for the first time ever (but it ain’t set in stone, they have to keep their eye on a couple of other matches too) while Kent are pinning their hopes of avoiding relegation on a collapse that’s unlikely as Bangladesh beating Australia in Australia in a Test match.

So just one question, why, Dear Fred, could you not just hold out with this headline-grabbing news for one day? County cricket is alive and kicking in England and all other domestic competitions could take a leaf from its book. county cricket deserves all the attention that it is getting but you just had to go and steal the limelight.

You are the knob of the week. That is all.

Freddie has always been okay with me; one of the more likeable Poms in my opinion.
I think the England team’s progress seems a bit scary if you consider that now they are able to do well without two players they couldn’t have done without several years ago- KP and Flintoff. The latter has been going downhill ever since 2006 but KP getting dropped would just have been incomprehensible a while ago.
Sunny´s last [type] ..Goodbye again Freddie
