Murali, the legend, the bushbaby, the hero

I’ll admit it. I’ve always been kinda scared of Muttiah Muralithiran. I always thought he looked a bit like a bushbaby….

Or maybe a Gremlin or even one of those Furby creatures. Whatever you want to compare his looks with, he never really was somebody that I would want to run into in a dark alley. I mean, 800 wickets is pretty impressive. That’s 100 times more than what some bowlers take in their entire careers. In total, he bowled 43,669 balls. Imagine bowling that many balls. You can’t even count that far, imagine bowling that many. Incredible.

He also managed to take 67 five-wicket hauls and 22 ten-wicket hauls. 22. That is how long I have been on this planet for.  The best part about Murali is that nobody has ever really had anything bad to say about him, aside from the fact that he is a chucker – but ever slower bowler gets called a chucker at some point in his career.

As scary looking as he might be, according some very trustworthy sources, he is one of the nicest cricketers to ever grace the game with his presence and, had he been stuck on 799, he would not have done a Shahid Afridi and come out of retirement to claim the prized 800th scalp.

We can all learn a lot from Murali, here are some of the lessons.

1. You don’t have to be that good looking to be good at something.

2. Being humble and a nice person ensures you will have fireworks when you retire

3. If people insult your action, you just keep on chuckin, I mean…truckin.

4.  Nice guys finish with 800 wickets, and that’s just in Tests.

5. Nice guys also get around 1000-odd Test runs.

6. You are a failure as  a human being because you will never be as good as this guy…
