On first day at Centurion, cricket gave to me….

in General Sweeps, India, South Africa

….rain that makes you so bored.
….super soppers to clear the rain that poured
….and humble pie as the crowd roared.

The day went a little something like this.

It’s raining, we won’t have play today. Oh no wait, some sunshine, about 2cm of blue sky. Ah, shit, more rain. Definitely no play today. Drizzle now, maybe some play later. No, wait, raining again. Forget that.

And then, as if though the weather gods were saying: “Haha, just making sure you remember how annoying we are, have some sunshine,” the skies cleared and the super duper soppers started sopping like they can only sop in South Africa. In record time the outfiled was dried and we were ready for play. In what was probably the most pivotal moment of the match, Biff won the toss and chose to bowl.

My stomach churned as I had visions of Guatam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag putting on a tremendous opening parternership. Then I opened the scorecard on my phone and saw 1-1. And so it carried on. Wickets kept on falling and my stomach swelled as I kept on gulping down slice after slice of humble pie until I eventually ate so much humble pie my head started to hurt.

Today I learnt that:

1. South African groundstaff are world class.

2. Indians ARE vulnerable when you pitch it short.

3. India can’t actually follow on in the first innings. (well, I knew that already, but I thought I’d try anyway).

4. Harbhajan Singh annoys me more than any other person on this planet. Kevin Pietersen included.

5. South African bowlers are capable of taking wickets, especially when the conditions are in their favour and they still work hard to take those wickets. They don’t even need a full day’s play to do so.

6. Test cricket is much more fun to watch when it’s a bowler’s game.

7. The Cobras are the worst team to play cricket in South Africa this season (India scored more runs than they did in some of their 40 over matches and India were shite today.)

8. Mark Boucher’s still got it.

9. Advanced Hair studio totally works.

10. This could potentially be a tremendous summer of cricket for South Africa

A day for bowling first!

Test Cricket is definitely far more exciting when it is a bowlers game – and that is the only time a draw can be exciting.

Totally agree! I love the sound of falling wickets!
The first day at Centurion and the first 2 days in Perth have seen 29 wickets fall!
