Greatbatch Premonition

Mark Greatbatch

There is something they say about premonitions. You don’t realize them as strongly as an intuition.

Why do I say that? Well, about a week ago, I was participating in a draft selection game in which you had to forge an all time ODI XI. It was the later rounds, and by that time all the known stars have gone. I was in need of someone who could whack the ball, as all the specialists were in place in my team.

Mark Greatbatch came to mind. That was the premonition.

This is the outcome.

He is the new coach. The new guy who would call Vettori ‘boss’.

Let’s hope he is as aggressive as coach as he was as a batsman. Boy, won’t we love some aggression from coaches in this robotic world.

Saurav Ganguly has developed a knack of defying all public opinion and make astonishing comebacks. This one cannot be categorised as a comeback though. After all, he was never quite out of reckoning. With the IPL-3 scheduled to be held in India, the Kolkatans would have surely smirked at a McCullum captaining their side with their prince riding the boundary.

So the news is finally out. Saurav Chandidas Ganguly has been reappointed captain of the Kolkata KnightRiders.

In another irrelevant piece of news, Dav Whatmore is the new coach of the Kolkata KnightRiders. There is little information about the chemistry between Whatmore and Ganguly, but knowing both of them, there is soon going to be some trouble brewing. Unless KKR win. As if that is going to happen.

Ganguly, when approached, said that he doesn’t want to say anything on this matter apart from “thank you Shah Rukh”.

I shall distance myself from this back-scratching, and take your leave for now.

Now this really took me some time to digest. The Mumbai Indians is tired of losing even after having the most expensive team, studded with Sachin, Sanath, Duminy, Bravo, Malinga and many, many more extremely awesome players.

They have everything except the bottom line. And that is wins under the belt. They have been plagued with many problems. Contingencies, rather.

That is because most of their problems arise on the spot and at that time, there is nothing they can do about it, apart from imparting more discipline in the nets.

Looking back at the run outs at the last minute, the stupid batting, the losing off the last over, are all contingencies.

Now someone out there in the Ambani camp thinks that all that was due to improper coaching. That is what prompted to replace their coach Praveen Amre, a brilliant thinker of the game.

They have replaced him with none other than Robin Singh, the man who practically screwed up Deccan Chargers in season one.

He was involved in dressing room altercations, claimed that he was not the biggest authority, and even stooped to the point of not quitting at the end of the season. Everything points to him not being an ideal coach.

Chuck that, he isn’t even an ideal fielding coach for India.

Mumbai Indians should concentrate on removing the basic habit of losing from their system before they can expect a turnaround – no matter who they appoint as coach.

I rest my case. All counter arguments are welcome.
