in India

The league stages of the IPL are done away with now. Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Deccan have qualified, the other four teams have been quieted. Everything seems hunky dory. (You could shout about the financial controversies but I don’t give a carrot)

As is the case with many things that are hunky dory, something emerges, disrupting the hunky doriness of the whole affair. A certain Virender Sehwag, of the Delhi Daredevils, has just found out that he is injured and would not be available for the T20 world cup. The World Cup is set to commence in  the Caribbean later this month.

There had been a lot of under the surface stories that Sehwag was on the verge of breaking down, and that Delhi were forcibly playing him. It is up to you to believe or disbelieve such stories. Now that he is officially injured, those things do not really matter. More so because Delhi is already out of the IPL.

That done and dusted, let us talk about the replacement. Murali Vijay. He of the Chennai Superkings. Scored a hundred against the Rajasthan Royals in great fashion. Is certainly good enough to be in the INDIAN TEAM as an opener.

On the other hand, there is Robin Uthappa. Supremely talented. Has been on fire this IPL. If the opener factor is not brought up, i believe most neutrals would pick him.

That is the irony. The opener factor HAS been brought up. That M Vijay is a test opener, he should replace Sehwag instead of Robin who is not an opener. What is an opener in 20 over cricket?

Therein lies the case. You be the judge. Let me know what you feel.
