Chevrolet Warriors limited overs heroes Davy Jacobs and Rusty Theron were on Tuesday named among the five Mutual & Federal South African Cricket Annual Cricketers of the Year.
Also honoured at the launch of the 2010 edition of the publication were Alviro Petersen and Thami Tsolekile of the bizhub Highveld Lions and Chevrolet Knights all-rounder Ryan McLaren.
Jacobs and Theron were key figures for the Warriors, who won both the MTN40 and Standard Bank Pro20 domestic titles last season.
Paddlesweep.net had the chance to chat to Jacobs after the awards and the hard-hitting batsman was humble in his thanks.
“I am honoured to have received this award and it’s nice to be recognized for the hard work I’ve put in last season. It was an unbelievable season for the Warriors with winning two trophies and for me it’s a personal high to have captained the Warriors to achieve all this success. Other highlights included the Hong Kong sixes trophy, emerging players tour to Australia and, obviously, the Champions League.
“It goes without saying that without the undying support of my wife, Lizelle and my inspiration Lilly (his daughter), none of this would matter. ”
Jacobs added that playing in the Champions League and reaching the finals was beyond the Warriors’ expectations and he hailed Russell Domingo, Chevrolet Warriors coach for the impact he’s had on the team.
“None of my personal success would have been possible without the guys in the team and, of course, our coach.”
When asked if he was disappointed with not being selected for the national side to play Pakistan in UAE later this month, Jacobs said that while it was a let down he can just keep doing what he’s doing and hope for the best.
“Obviously it was disappointing not being selecting, I thought I had a shot after my performance in the Champions League but I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully I’ll get a chance for the one-day series against India next year.”
While he might not have cracked the nod to the national side, the IPL still remains a possibility for the 27-year old. Currently only internationally capped players are allowed to enter the auction while uncapped players can only feature in the IPL if a team directly approaches them prior to the auction.
However, there is a possibility that the rules might change and that uncapped players will be allowed to enter into the auction should more than one team be interested in them.
Should the rule shift happen, Jacobs said that he would most definitely consider putting himself up for auction adding that he knows that more than one team is interested in him.
