Ask any new-generation cricket tragic what they think about almanacks and they’ll probably let out a huge yawn. Stoic, boring, uptight and only written by the elite.
While essential, Almanacks rarely capture the imagination of the younger cricket watching generation and with some may talented cricket writers on the block, it hardly ever showcases the real, raw talent that lurks in the cricket writing underworld.
That’s why we’re all so pleased The Alternative Cricket Almanack has found its way to shelves and online stores.
Instead of studying to become a doctor, Nishant Joshi put together a book which is a must-read for all cricket fans – 29 articles by 20 different authors, packed with visceral humour and brutally honest opinion.
What makes this book even more special is that all proceeds go to charity. All of the money made from the sale of the book will go to Afghan Youth Cricket Support Organization. Read more about the book and its cause here.
The good news is that we are giving away two of these books to two Paddlesweep.net readers.
There are two ways you can win:
1. Leave a comment and tell us about your best alternative cricket moment. Be creative, the best story wins.
2. Tweet this link by using the Retweet button (so we can track it) - and the title: “What’s your alternative cricket story”. If you use the share bar at the top of the page, the title will generate automatically, just don’t remove the @paddlesweep handle. One winner will be randomly selected from all who Tweeted.
The competition will close on January 5 2011, so you’ve got more than enough time to get creative and Tweeting. Enter as many times as you like.

Does the story have to be funny? Or just alternative will do! I have got many moments but I am not sure they are going to make into big story.
Because I have got few day dreamed stories and it became reality. I was going to panicked when that happened. But it was terrifying prophecy. Would that work? Or that count as just fantasy? I will try to explain.
Anything alternative
Funny, fantasy, whatever you’ve got.
Okey Dokey. I will try but I am sure people who watches cricket more will share their stories, I am excited to hear other people stories, as well.
Surprised to see Stepen Smith left out of Australia side in Sri Lanka in August
He was player of the series in Zimbabwe so that says something positive
Haven’t got a funny cricket story, but it’s important people buy this book. Anything to help give that country hope in something is so important to their future.
South Africa played Australia and scored the highest cricket innings beating them and that happen to be my best ever watched game

I think I participated in the worst match ever. I played as a legspinner for my university, and we were playing our first game of a T20 tournament. We had struggled to a score of around 110 in 18 overs, when I came in as the specialist #11. Amidst the last-minute bouncer dodging, I managed a couple of runs in the covers, but slipped on the pitch and sprained my ankle running the second. They missed the runout and I felt pretty good about being not out as we got to 120.
They reached the target in the 6th over so I didn’t get a bowl, though I wanted to after the other legspinner in the team got hit for 33.
That’s my story
